Social media giant TikTok has announced plans to reduce its workforce globally, with a focus on Malaysia, as it transitions to AI-powered content moderation. The China-based company, ByteDance, revealed that it would be cutting several hundred jobs worldwide, with less than 500 job cuts expected in Malaysia alone.
The move is part of TikTok’s efforts to enhance content moderation, with a spokesperson stating a $2 billion investment in trust and safety for 2024. The platform currently uses a mix of human moderators and automated technology to monitor content.
This restructuring aligns with rumors of TikTok streamlining its operations and marketing globally. ByteDance, with over 110,000 employees across 200 cities, faces increased regulatory scrutiny in Malaysia due to the proliferation of harmful content.
The Malaysian government’s push for social media platforms to obtain operating licenses reflects the growing concerns over cybercrimes like fraud, child exploitation, and cyberbullying.
