In response to the devastation caused by Hurricane Helene, Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee has launched a new $100 million loan program called the Helene Emergency Assistance Loan (HEAL) program. This initiative aims to aid counties in clearing debris and repairing damaged water systems that were severely impacted by the hurricane.
The no-interest loans will provide immediate relief to communities while they wait for federal reimbursements. Governor Lee highlighted the state’s strong financial position and commitment to helping those in need during this crisis.
Funding from the HEAL program will be divided to allocate $35 million for water and wastewater repairs and $65 million for debris removal. The money will be sourced from Tennessee’s Medicaid program, TennCare, to assist in addressing health and welfare needs.
Counties eligible for assistance include Carter, Claiborne, Cocke, Grainger, Greene, Hamblen, Hawkins, Jefferson, Johnson, Sevier, Sullivan, Unicoi, and Washington. With 17 reported deaths and ongoing cleanup efforts, Tennessee is determined to support its communities in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene.
