Slovakia to broaden repair of Ukrainian military equipment, foreign minister reveals

Slovakia is making a significant move in its support to Ukraine by expanding its military base in Michalovce to focus on repairing Ukrainian military equipment instead of supplying new weapons. Foreign Minister Juraj Blanár highlighted this shift in policy, emphasizing that Slovakia will no longer offer military equipment from its stockpiles to Ukraine.

The expansion of the repair facility will be funded by Germany, with Slovakia providing the physical premises. This decision comes amidst Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico’s announcement to halt military aid to Ukraine, a drastic change in the country’s foreign policy.

Blanár made this announcement during his official visit to Germany, where discussions on Russia’s war in Ukraine, migration, and bilateral relations took place. Prime Minister Fico’s meeting with Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal further underscored Slovakia’s stance on limiting Ukraine’s NATO aspirations.

This development signifies Slovakia’s commitment to supporting Ukraine through alternative means, reinforcing their partnership in challenging geopolitical times.
