Scottish former First Minister Alex Salmond, a key figure in the Scottish independence movement, passed away at the age of 69. Salmond led the devolved Scottish government for seven years and played a vital role in boosting support for Scottish independence during the 2014 referendum, where Scots voted to remain in the United Kingdom.
Salmond collapsed after a speech in North Macedonia, leading to an outpouring of tributes from political leaders across the spectrum. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer acknowledged Salmond’s lasting legacy and deep commitment to Scotland’s heritage and communities.
Despite facing allegations of sexual assault, Salmond was cleared of all charges in 2020. He later founded a new party called Alba and hosted a political talk show on a Russian channel.
Salmond joined the SNP as a student and championed change within the party, eventually becoming a dominant force in Scottish politics. He leaves behind his wife, Moira McGlashan, whom he married in 1981.
Salmond’s passing marks the end of an era in Scottish politics and leaves a void in the country’s quest for independence.
