SC to hear petition against proposed constitution amendment in Pakistan on Oct 17

The Supreme Court has set a hearing date for a petition challenging the government’s proposed constitutional amendments, including the extension of the top judge’s term, on October 17. The amendments have raised concerns among experts for potentially compromising the judiciary’s independence.

JUI-F, PPP express hope to agree on joint draft

Meanwhile, the JUI-F and PPP are working towards a common draft for the constitutional amendments. Three separate drafts are being prepared, with a committee led by PPP’s Khursheed Shah facilitating discussions among political parties.

A subcommittee has been formed to consider the drafts submitted by JUI-F and PPP, with a focus on the supremacy of parliament. Differences between the parties mainly revolve around the establishment of a Constitutional Court. PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari is optimistic about forming a joint draft for broader political consensus on the 26th constitutional amendment.

PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Khan stated that the party will present its recommendations after assessing both drafts.
