SA MP fired for ‘misrepresenting party’ in Morocco visit

South Africa’s Obed Bapela, a member of the African National Congress (ANC) and chair of the party’s International Relations Subcommittee, has been removed from his position for allegedly misrepresenting the party during a recent visit to Morocco. This decision follows a meeting in Rabat where Bapela discussed strengthening economic ties between South Africa and Morocco, going against ANC policies regarding Western Sahara.

The ANC has instructed Bapela to explain his actions in Morocco and has directed him to refrain from engaging in any further discussions on behalf of the party that contradict official ANC positions. Failure to provide a satisfactory explanation has raised concerns about his commitment to the party’s values.

Bapela’s conduct will now face disciplinary action for violating ANC policies. The party emphasizes the importance of upholding ethics and discipline among senior members, especially in sensitive diplomatic roles.

During the meeting with Moroccan officials, Bapela welcomed Morocco’s return to the African Union as an opportunity for collaboration on pan-African challenges. His actions, however, have raised questions about his judgment and allegiance to ANC principles.
