Polish PM Declares Reforms to EU Asylum Procedures
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk unveiled plans to overhaul the European Union’s asylum protocols, proposing a temporary halt to the right to asylum to fortify Poland’s borders and manage migration. Tusk declared at a party conference that a key component of the migration strategy would involve a time-limited suspension of asylum rights, urging European recognition of this measure.
Tusk argued that the existing asylum system was being exploited by Belarusian and Russian leaders, as well as human traffickers. Emphasizing the need for Poland to regain full control over its borders, he criticized the misuse of asylum policies and highlighted the influx of migrants from the Middle East and Africa illegally entering via Belarus.
Defending stringent border controls, Tusk rebuked the previous government for facilitating the entry of undesired migrants. He denounced the EU’s proposed migration pact as a threat to Polish sovereignty and underscored the importance of migrants embracing Polish standards for integration.
The PM expressed solidarity with security forces facing challenges at the border, referencing a recent soldier’s death. He reaffirmed Poland’s commitment to protecting national interests and warned against implementing EU measures detrimental to the country.
