Poland’s 2025 EU presidency to prioritize Ukraine’s integration and EU expansion, says Duda.

Polish President Andrzej Duda recently announced that during Poland’s EU presidency in 2025, a key focus will be on the European integration of Ukraine and promoting an “open door to Europe” policy for new members. This declaration was made at the Arraiolos Group summit in Krakow, where leaders from EU member states discussed various pressing issues.

The discussions centered around supporting Ukraine in the face of Russian aggression, accelerating Ukraine’s EU accession process, strengthening EU-U.S. ties, rebuilding Ukraine post-war, and ensuring energy security in the EU. Leaders, including Estonia’s president, emphasized the importance of expanding the EU to include Ukraine, Moldova, and the Western Balkans.

Despite Poland’s upcoming EU presidency, Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orban has been a figure of contention within the bloc. Orban’s stance on Ukraine and Russia has caused tension, with his obstructionist approach leading to criticism from European colleagues.

The EU’s engagement with Ukraine and Moldova has progressed significantly, with both countries being granted candidate status and accession talks being initiated. As Poland gears up to lead the EU Council in 2025, the dynamics within the bloc regarding Ukraine and Russia remain complex and ever-evolving.
