Observer groups decry irregularities in Rivers LG Polls

By Luminous Jannamike

Observer groups have strongly criticized the chaotic Rivers State local government elections, marred by irregularities and violence despite court orders and security concerns. The Independent Election Monitoring Group (IEMG) reported widespread irregularities, lack of election materials, violence by ruling party supporters, and dubious result declarations.

Dr. Emmanuel Agabi, the IEMG Executive Director, highlighted the severity of the situation caused by Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s insistence on holding the elections against legal rulings. The Nigerian Police were absolved of any blame due to a court ruling, urging a full investigation into arson attacks, nullification of results, federal security deployment, and dialogues between the governor and opposition parties.

The crisis in Rivers State, exacerbated by political power plays, disregard for legal rulings, and violence, threatens the state’s democratic fabric and citizens’ security. Stakeholders must collaborate to address electoral shortcomings, ensure accountability for violence, and promote democracy upheld by the public’s will rather than coercion or manipulation.

The Rivers State situation is a warning that demands immediate intervention to prevent national repercussions. Everyone must work towards restoring peace, stability, and genuine democratic governance.
