The Cybercrime Chronicles: Nigerian-British Man Sentenced to 7 Years in U.S. for Email Scam

Oludayo Adeagbo, a 45-year-old Nigerian-British man, has been handed a seven-year prison term in the U.S. for his involvement in a multimillion-dollar business email compromise (BEC) scheme. According to the U.S. Department of Justice, court documents show that Adeagbo conspired in cyber-enabled BEC schemes that aimed to steal over $3 million from various entities in Texas and North Carolina.

Adeagbo and his cohorts targeted local governments, construction firms, and a college in Houston, as well as defrauding a university in North Carolina of more than $1.9 million. After being extradited from the UK, Adeagbo arrived in the U.S. in August 2022 to face criminal charges. He pleaded guilty to wire fraud and conspiracy to commit wire fraud before being sentenced.

Expressing the severity of cybercrimes like BEC schemes, Nicole Argentieri of the Justice Department emphasized the commitment to prosecute cybercriminals. BEC scams, which deceive victims into transferring funds through fraudulent emails, have become rampant, causing significant financial losses and eroding trust in digital communications. The battle against cybercrime continues as law enforcement agencies work diligently to bring perpetrators to justice.
