Nicaragua severs ties with Israel, denounces ‘genocide’ and ‘fascist’ government

Vice President Rosario Murillo of Nicaragua recently condemned Israel’s actions in Palestinian territories, accusing the Israeli government of being “fascist” and committing “genocide.” Murillo expressed concerns about the conflict in the Middle East, stating that it is expanding to other countries and posing a threat to Lebanon, Syria, Yemen, and Iran. Nicaragua’s Congress also approved a resolution to commemorate the anniversary of the Gaza war.

Nicaragua, under the leadership of President Daniel Ortega, is known for its close ties to Iran. Despite facing isolation due to allegations of dictatorship and human rights abuses in 2018, Nicaragua stands by its alliance with Iran. In contrast, Mexico’s new president, Claudia Sheinbaum, who is Jewish, called for the recognition of a Palestinian state to achieve peace in the Middle East. She emphasized the need for both Israel and Palestine to be recognized and highlighted the futility of war in resolving conflicts.
