Nicaragua has announced the severing of diplomatic ties with Israel, condemning the Israeli government as “fascist” and “genocidal”. The decision comes in response to Israel’s ongoing attacks on Gaza and Lebanon, with the Nicaraguan government citing the escalating conflict that now threatens other nations in the region.
Earlier, Nicaragua’s congress passed a resolution urging action against Israel on the anniversary of the Gaza war, which has claimed thousands of lives. The country has also taken legal action against Germany for supporting Israel militarily and defunding UNRWA, the UN Palestinian refugee agency.
Joining other Latin American nations, Nicaragua stands in support of Palestine, with Brazilian president Lula and Chile’s President Gabriel Boric condemning Israel’s actions as genocide. The international community continues to criticize Israel’s use of disproportionate force in conflicts, with calls for justice at the International Court of Justice.
