Nicaragua Breaks Diplomatic Ties with Israel Over Gaza War
The Nicaraguan government has declared a break in diplomatic relations with Israel, denouncing its leaders as ‘fascist’ and ‘genocidal’ in response to the ongoing war in Gaza. Vice President Rosario Murillo made the announcement after a resolution was passed by the Congress on the one-year anniversary of the conflict.
While largely a symbolic move due to minimal existing diplomatic ties between the two nations, Nicaragua’s decision adds to Israel’s mounting isolation amid the Gaza war and escalating conflicts in the Middle East.
Latin American countries like Brazil, Colombia, and Chile have expressed strong opposition to Israel’s actions in Gaza, with Colombian President Gustavo Petro and Brazilian leader Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva cutting diplomatic ties with Israel earlier this year. The Ortega government also attempted to halt German arms sales to Israel through the International Court of Justice in April.
As Nicaragua faces its own diplomatic challenges, the global backlash against Israel’s actions in Gaza continues to grow, highlighting broader tensions in the region.
