Keiichi Ishii, the new head of Komeito, the ruling Liberal Democratic Party’s ally, believes maintaining a majority of seats in the Lower House is crucial for the ruling coalition in the upcoming general election. Despite public criticism of the LDP’s political funds scandal, Ishii expects a challenging environment for the ruling bloc in the October 27 election, even with an increased government approval rating.
Komeito aims to win in all 11 single-seat constituencies and exceed pre-election strength under the proportional representation system. Ishii emphasized the party’s commitment to political reform, highlighting the amended political funds control law as a significant achievement. Komeito plans to abolish controversial funds for lawmakers and increase transparency in fund usage.
Regarding economic policies, Ishii stressed the importance of supporting households and reducing utility bills. He also mentioned Komeito’s preference for including the Self-Defense Forces in the Constitution’s governance structure rather than amending Article 9.
“We want to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the party’s founding next month with election victories,” Ishii emphasized as Komeito prepares for the upcoming challenges in the political landscape.
