Lebanon’s Prime Minister, Najip Mikati, has reiterated the country’s main priority of achieving a cease-fire to end Israeli aggression while ensuring the security and safety of its citizens. In a meeting with Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, Mikati emphasized Lebanon’s commitment to implementing UN Security Council Resolution 1701 and strengthening the Lebanese army’s presence in southern Lebanon.
Mikati also highlighted ongoing efforts with international players and the United Nations to pressure Israel into compliance with the resolution. He further discussed these priorities with US envoy Amos Hochstein, focusing on securing a cease-fire and exploring a comprehensive political solution based on the UN resolution.
The prime minister confirmed Hezbollah’s agreement to Resolution 1701 and submitted a request to the UN Security Council for an immediate cease-fire. The resolution, adopted in 2006, calls for a cessation of hostilities between Lebanon and Israel and the establishment of a demilitarized zone between the Blue Line and the Litani River.
Despite Israel’s airstrikes in Lebanon, causing casualties and displacements, Mikati continues to prioritize peace and security for Lebanon’s citizens and seeks international support for a lasting resolution to the conflict.
