Kyiv Independent’s ‘He Came Back’ wins Best Film at Prague fest

The Kyiv Independent’s impactful investigative documentary, “He Came Back,” has received the prestigious Best Film award at the Press Play Prague film festival. The documentary delves into the horrific sexual crimes committed during the Russian occupation of Kyiv and Kherson oblasts in early 2022. Held in Prague from Oct. 8 to 12, the festival highlighted the vital role of journalism in society, showcasing over 20 films across two competition categories.

Deputy Chief Editor Toma Istomina presented the film, shedding light on the investigation of sexual war crimes in Ukraine. The documentary, crafted by Olesia Bida, reveals Ukrainian law enforcement’s documentation of 292 cases of sexual violence by Russian soldiers, a number that likely represents only a fraction of the total. Two survivors bravely shared their harrowing experiences, enabling journalists to identify the perpetrators and their commanding officers.

The Kyiv Independent’s dedicated team, including Vitalii Havura, Max Yakobchuk, Kostiantyn Nechyporenko, and Yevheniia Motorevska, worked tirelessly on this project. Their commitment to uncovering these atrocities has shed light on a dark chapter in Ukraine’s history.
