Japan’s Maritime Self-Defense Force considering Starlink for improved sea connectivity

Exciting news for Maritime Self-Defense Force personnel! The poor telecommunications situation they currently face is set to improve drastically, as the MSDF gears up to make Starlink available on its vessels.

By introducing SpaceX’s Starlink service, the MSDF aims to provide its members with unrestricted internet access while out at sea. This move is part of the MSDF’s commitment to enhancing communication facilities for its personnel.

In order to make this vision a reality, the MSDF is seeking funding in the government’s fiscal 2025 budget to equip 48 vessels with the Starlink service. Their ultimate goal is to have almost all major vessels equipped with this service by the end of fiscal 2028.

This initiative not only promises a significant improvement in the telecommunications capabilities of the MSDF but also highlights their dedication to providing their personnel with the best possible resources for efficient communication while on duty.
