Retired Catholic Cardinal Honored for Education Contributions in South Sudan
The Western Bahr el-Ghazal State government recently paid tribute to retired Catholic Cardinal Gabriel Zubeir Wako for his significant contributions to education in Sudan and South Sudan. Deputy Governor Zackaria Joseph Garang praised Wako’s efforts during the commemoration of Daniel Comboni Day in Wau on October 10.
Garang highlighted Wako’s role in establishing schools for young South Sudanese during the conflict, providing access to education for thousands in distant areas. He noted that many current leaders in Juba and Wau are graduates of the schools Wako founded, with some serving as ambassadors and ministers.
Wako, who also played a key role in the Comprehensive Peace Agreement of 2005, emphasized the importance of unity and collaboration among South Sudanese. He urged against tribalism, emphasizing the need to work together for the well-being of future generations and the nation.
By promoting peace and education, Wako’s legacy continues to inspire positive change in South Sudan.
