Germany to Deploy Special Police Force Near Gas Infrastructure in Northern Seas

Sputnik International

The German Ministry of the Interior will deploy a permanent detachment of its GSG9 special police force to defend critical gas infrastructure in the Baltic and North seas, as reported by a German newspaper. Interior Minister Nancy Faeser made this decision due to security risks following attacks on Nord Stream gas pipelines. Recently, German forces spotted Russian boats mapping pipelines in the North and Baltic seas. The new GSG9 unit, equipped with speedboats and divers, will be stationed in Schleswig-Holstein for rapid response to security threats at sea.

The Nord Stream and Nord Stream 2 gas pipelines, linking Russia and Europe under the Baltic Sea, were hit by explosions in 2022, prompting investigations into potential sabotage. Russia, Denmark, and Sweden have expressed concerns, with the Russian Prosecutor General’s Office investigating the incident as an act of international terrorism.
