Finnish officials revealed that a Russian citizen, Vojislav Torden, is suspected of committing war crimes in Ukraine in 2014 and is expected to face charges soon. Torden, a commander of the Russian far-right group Rusich, was detained in Helsinki in July 2023.
The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) completed an investigation into multiple offenses dating back to 2014, accusing Torden of war crimes. The crimes allegedly occurred in eastern Ukraine in autumn 2014, but specific details have not been disclosed.
Due to concerns about inhumane conditions in Ukrainian prisons, Torden cannot be extradited to Ukraine as ruled by Finland’s supreme court. The investigation, done in cooperation with Ukrainian authorities and international organizations, involved hearings in both countries.
The prosecutors have until October 31 to bring charges. Finland’s adoption of universal jurisdiction allows it to prosecute individuals for crimes committed anywhere in the world. The next steps in the case are eagerly awaited as justice is sought for the war crimes allegedly committed in Ukraine.
