EU expresses serious concern over Israeli bill to ban UNRWA

EU Warns of ‘Disastrous Consequences’ from Draft Bill Banning UN Agency for Palestinian Refugees in Israel

The European Union has expressed deep concern over a draft Israeli bill that would ban the United Nations agency for Palestinian refugees from operating in Israel, potentially impacting aid distribution in Gaza. The bill, recently approved by an Israeli parliamentary committee, awaits final approval from the Knesset.

The EU emphasized its support for UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, warning of dire consequences if the bill passes. The EU urged Israeli authorities to allow UNRWA to continue its critical work in assisting and protecting Palestinian refugees.

Israel has long opposed UNRWA, accusing the organization of having ties to “terrorists” and advocating for its closure. In response to Israel’s allegations, international donors briefly suspended support, prompting a UN investigation that led to the dismissal of nine staff members.

Despite these challenges, the EU continues to champion the vital services provided by UNRWA, emphasizing its role in promoting regional stability and supporting a two-state solution.
