AMRITSAR, India—The city of Amritsar, known for its aspirations for a better life in Canada, is now facing challenges as financial requirements for international students have doubled. This change, along with other measures implemented by the Canadian government, has created apprehension among young Punjabis dreaming of studying abroad.

For Dhandeep Singh, 22, and Prabhjot Singh, 25, the new financial rules have shattered their dreams of moving to Canada for higher education. Similarly, Harmeet Kaur, 24, seeks the safety and freedom she believes Canada offers women. However, the increased financial burden has limited their options and forced them to reconsider their plans.

The decline in student visa applications has also impacted immigration consultants, raising concerns about their business prospects. Despite the challenges, these aspiring students remain determined to push through and succeed, although uncertainty looms.

The changes in Canadian policies are not only affecting opportunities in Canada but also raising concerns about their impact on Punjab’s social fabric. As aspirations collide with financial realities, the future remains uncertain for those dreaming of a better life abroad.
