PTI’s Protest Plan Condemned as “Political Terrorism” by Planning Minister
Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal strongly criticized the PTI’s call for a protest at D-Chowk on October 15, coinciding with the two-day Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit, labeling it as “political terrorism.” The PTI has halted its protests in Punjab and called for a nationwide gathering in Islamabad on the same day, demanding access to imprisoned founder Imran Khan despite a visitation ban at Adiala Jail until October 18 due to summit security.
Iqbal, addressing a conference in Islamabad, expressed disappointment at PTI’s timing parallel to the prestigious SCO summit, emphasizing the economic benefits for Pakistan. He denounced the protest as detrimental to economic progress and urged PTI supporters to reconsider their party’s actions, noting past disruptions caused by PTI protests in 2014.
Federal Minister Amir Muqam also rejected the protest, calling it anti-nationalistic and emphasizing the importance of the SCO summit for Pakistan. With heightened security measures in place, including army deployment and holiday declarations in Islamabad, the government aims to ensure the safety of summit delegates and prevent disruptions during the international event.
Condemnation from PPP
PPP representatives joined in condemning PTI’s protest plan, denouncing it as a plot against the country’s stability and urging PTI to withdraw the call. Stressing the significance of the upcoming international conference, they criticized PTI for promoting violence and advocated for peaceful engagement instead.
ITP Conducts Rehearsals for SCO Summit
Meanwhile, Islamabad Traffic Police conducted full dress rehearsals to prepare for the SCO summit, implementing a traffic plan to ensure smooth traffic flow during the event. Over 1,100 traffic officers will be deployed, and residents are encouraged to cooperate with police directives for a successful summit.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also reviewed summit arrangements, expressing satisfaction with the preparations for the upcoming SCO meeting.
