President Biden proposed to President Yoon a trilateral summit with Japan to be held by the end of the year. The message was relayed by U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken during a dinner hosted by the Laotian Prime Minister, where leaders from ASEAN countries were present. The proposal aims to strengthen the cooperation between the U.S., South Korea, and Japan, building on the agreements made during the Camp David Summit last year.
President Yoon expressed his willingness to engage closely and meet with President Biden within the year. The proposed summit is expected to take place after the Japanese general election at the end of the month and the U.S. presidential election in November. The potential meetings could coincide with the APEC and G20 summits later this year. As President Biden’s term ends in January, there is a window of opportunity for further diplomatic discussions between the three countries.
With U.S. Under Secretary of State Kurt Campbell scheduled to visit Japan and South Korea consecutively, there are expectations for a trilateral diplomatic meeting to be held, further solidifying the cooperation between these nations.
