Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy recently had a private audience with Pope Francis at the Vatican, marking their third meeting. Lasting 35 minutes, the meeting included a private conversation, delegation presentation, and an exchange of gifts. Pope Francis gifted Zelenskyy a bronze bas-relief symbolizing peace, while Zelenskyy presented the Pope with an oil painting depicting the horrors of Russian war crimes in Bucha.

Zelenskyy’s visit to the Vatican comes after meetings with Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, where he presented the Victory Plan. The Pope and Zelenskyy discussed war and peace in Ukraine, emphasizing bringing about a just and sustainable peace. Zelenskyy also met with Vatican officials to discuss humanitarian and religious aspects of the conflict.

This visit marks Zelenskyy’s third to the Vatican, continuing his efforts to garner international support for Ukraine. The meeting with Pope Francis underscores the urgent need for peace in a country plagued by conflict.
