The United Nations accuses Israel of committing “crimes against humanity” by targeting health facilities and medical personnel in Gaza. The UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry found that Israel has been deliberately destroying Gaza’s healthcare system as part of a broader assault on the region.
The report also highlights the abuse of Palestinian detainees in Israeli detention facilities and of hostages in Gaza. It accuses both Israel and Palestinian armed groups of “torture” and sexual violence.
Commission chair Navi Pillay called for an immediate stop to the destruction of healthcare facilities in Gaza, emphasizing the long-term detrimental effects on the civilian population.
The report found deliberate killings, detentions, and torture of medical personnel by Israeli security forces in Gaza, constituting war crimes and “the crime against humanity of extermination.” It also highlighted the institutionalized mistreatment of Palestinian detainees under direct orders from the National Security Minister of Israel.
The report urges accountability and reparations for the “appalling acts of abuse” against detainees and calls for the immediate release of all hostages held in Gaza.
