UN official calls Lebanon displacement ‘devastating’, deems support insufficient

The Devastating Displacement Crisis in Lebanon

In the midst of intense Israeli bombing and cross-border fire between Israel and Hezbollah, Lebanon is facing a devastating displacement crisis. Hundreds of thousands of people have been forced to flee their homes, with more than one million displaced since September 23.

Othman Belbeisi, the International Organization for Migration’s Middle East and North Africa director, described the situation as “devastating” and emphasized the urgent need for more support. The IOM has verified and tracked over 690,000 internally displaced people in Lebanon, with another 400,000 reportedly fleeing the country, many to Syria.

Despite the crisis, international aid falls far short of the $426 million UN appeal to address the humanitarian needs over the next three months. Lebanon, already struggling with a five-year economic crisis, is in dire need of assistance to support those affected by the conflict.

As the situation escalates, it is crucial for support to increase to provide aid and shelter to those impacted by the crisis. Let’s come together to help end this displacement crisis in Lebanon.
