The Ukrainian Prosecutor General’s Office revealed that Russian troops have been looting cultural artifacts from Ukraine and selling them on the international black market. In response to this, a specialized unit was set up to track down these stolen treasures, with the help of the FBI. Ukrainian Prosecutor General, Andriy Kostin, condemned Russia for not only destroying cultural heritage but also stealing valuable artifacts from museums and archaeological sites.
The Kherson Art Museum identified 100 paintings that were allegedly looted by Russian forces, with 99 of them ending up in the Central Museum in Crimea, following the illegal annexation of the peninsula in 2014. Additionally, nearly 15,000 other cultural objects have been taken amid the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
