In response to retaliatory military operations by Yemeni armed forces against Israeli-bound vessels, Danish giant Maersk and German carrier Hapag-Lloyd have decided to suspend all journeys through the Red Sea. The two companies, part of the newly-formed “Gemini Cooperation” alliance, will now be taking the longer route around Africa via the Cape of Good Hope, starting from February 1, 2025. This decision was made due to safety concerns in the Red Sea.
Although they plan to return to the Red Sea route when it is deemed safe, for now, the Gemini Cooperation will require approximately 340 vessels compared to the 300 ships that would have been used if they had resumed operations through the Red Sea. The situation in the Red Sea remains volatile, with Yemeni military targeting Israeli ships in solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza.
The Yemeni armed forces have made it clear that they will continue their operations against hostile targets until the Israeli regime ends its genocidal campaign. International shipping companies not affiliated with Israel are safe to sail in the area, avoiding destinations in occupied Palestinian territories.
