Japan’s police chief, National Police Agency Commissioner General Yasuhiro Tsuyuki, has urged officers across the country to take all necessary measures to safeguard important figures in the upcoming general election. This comes in the wake of recent incidents, including the shooting of former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and an attempted attack on then-Prime Minister Fumio Kishida during campaign events.
During a meeting with top prefectural police officers in Tokyo, Tsuyuki emphasized the need for heightened security and increased vigilance to prevent any potential threats to key political figures. He called for strategic risk assessments and the flexible deployment of officers to ensure the safety of candidates until the election concludes on October 27.
To address election law violations, the NPA has established a task force, with Tsuyuki instructing members to crackdown on any illegal activities and handle disruptions to stump speeches properly. With a focus on fair enforcement and protection, the police are committed to maintaining law and order during this critical period.
