The Government’s Constitutional Amendment Stalls as Consensus Remains Elusive
The highly anticipated constitutional amendment proposed by the government hit a roadblock as consensus could not be reached in the parliamentary committee meeting held on Friday. The amendment includes key changes such as extending the term of the top judge.
The parliamentary committee, led by PPP’s Khursheed Shah, consists of representatives from all major parties, including the PTI. Three separate drafts of the constitutional package are being prepared by the government, PPP, and JUI-F.
Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar stated that recommendations were discussed in the meeting, but no agreement was reached. The PTI requested more time to review the proposals, while JUI-F will present their draft at a future meeting.
Despite the setback, efforts are being made to garner support from all parties to achieve consensus on the amendment. PTI leaders present at the meeting emphasized the need for clarity in the government’s draft and further discussions in upcoming committee meetings.
The amendment discussion has been postponed until after the SCO summit, with PPP and PML-N considering incorporating suggestions from other parties to secure a two-thirds majority in parliament.
