US Presidential Election: Implications for US-Asean Partnership
As the US presidential election approaches, the future of the partnership between the US and Asean comes under scrutiny. With geopolitical uncertainties and heightened rivalry with Beijing, the US is keen on reinforcing its regional presence and partnerships.
The current Indo-Pacific Strategy is likely to remain the foundation of US regional policy, but there may be a shift towards more direct engagement with Asean and its member states. This pivot aims to solidify the US as a Pacific power and ensure security and stability in the region.
During the 2022 US-Asean Summit, Washington reiterated its commitment to the region and showed interest in playing a larger role with Asean. This increased engagement is supported by bipartisan consensus in the US.
Last year’s summit saw Vice-President Kamala Harris affirm America’s commitment to Asean’s centrality. The Biden administration has proposed substantial funds for the region’s economic development and security, signaling a move towards strengthening Asean institutions to counter China’s influence.
