Montevideo’s airport set for major technological upgrade

Friday, October 11th 2024 – 08:40 UTC

The new ILS system will be in use at Carrasco’s 07/25 runway

Exciting news for travelers as Montevideo’s Carrasco International Airport is undergoing a US$20 million technological upgrade to implement instrument landings with zero visibility. This improvement is expected to reduce flight delays significantly, as explained by Aeropuertos Uruguay’s Infrastructure and Maintenance Manager, Jorge Navarro.

The current category I precision instrument approach at Carrasco requires pilots to make crucial decisions at just 60 meters above the ground. With the new ILS CAT III b system, weather-related delays and diversions will be minimized, benefiting both passengers and airlines.

The project has already commenced, with work scheduled for completion by the end of next year. President Luis Lacalle Pou and high-ranking officials were present at the recent launch event, emphasizing the importance of the airport as Uruguay’s gateway to the world.
