Milei’s Proposal: Privatize Argentina’s Highways

Argentina’s Highways Going Private: President Javier Milei’s Bold Move

President Javier Milei has announced a groundbreaking plan to privatize Argentina’s national highway system. The move aims to transfer road management from the state-owned Corredores Viales to private companies, aligning with Milei’s vision of reducing government involvement and fostering private sector growth.

Corredores Viales, currently incurring significant losses, will now rely on private businesses to improve operational efficiency. The privatization process will involve an international bidding system open to all companies with proper insurance.

This strategy, anticipated to save $5.6 billion, will initiate bidding in December 2024 for select sections and in February 2025 for a substantial portion of the highway network. With past privatization attempts facing economic crises and policy changes, Milei’s administration is determined to establish a new direction for Argentina’s economic future.

This bold initiative is poised to reshape Argentina’s infrastructure management and could significantly impact the country’s economic recovery and growth trajectory.
