Lebanese PM Calls for Cease-fire in Conflict with Israel
Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati has announced that the country’s Foreign Ministry will be submitting a request to the UN Security Council for a complete and immediate cease-fire, along with the implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1701. Speaking at a press conference in Beirut, Mikati condemned Israel’s attacks on UN peacekeeping forces UNIFIL, describing them as a “heinous crime” and a “violation of the sanctity of the international community.”
He emphasized the humanitarian crisis in Lebanon, where more than 1,300 people have been killed and 1.2 million displaced due to Israeli airstrikes and ground invasion. Mikati also highlighted plans to establish new shelter centers for the displaced persons. The Lebanese government is committed to implementing UN Resolution 1701, particularly in deploying the army in the south of the country.
Resolution 1701, adopted in 2006, calls for a cessation of hostilities between Lebanon and Israel and the establishment of a demilitarized zone along the border. Despite the conflict, Mikati confirmed that Hezbollah, a partner in the Lebanese government, agrees to the implementation of the resolution.
