Citizens in South Sudan are facing a multitude of challenges due to the country’s economic meltdown. From skyrocketing commodity prices to unemployment and the impacts of climate change, the situation is dire.

Residents of Juba City shared their stories with Radio Tamazuj, highlighting the harsh realities they are living. Edwina Pitia John, a local of Gudele West suburb, expressed her struggles with daily survival, including the inability to pay her children’s school fees.

Small business owners like Asunta Kilah, a juice vendor, are feeling the pinch as well. The high cost of inputs and fewer customers have led to a decline in her business. Mama Teddy, a restaurant owner, also noted a decrease in customers due to rising prices.

The youth, like Paul Moses, are among the hardest hit, with many resorting to informal jobs for survival. Juba-based economist Akim Ajieth emphasized the severe decline in living standards and the lack of access to basic needs like water and medicine.

With slim hopes for improvement under the current government, South Sudanese citizens are facing growing hardships that call for urgent interventions.
