Italy’s Defense Minister Denounces Israeli Attacks on UN Peacekeepers in Lebanon
Italy’s defense minister, Guido Crosetto, has condemned the Israeli army’s actions against UN peacekeepers in Lebanon, stating that they could be deemed as war crimes. The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) reported that Israeli forces have repeatedly shelled their headquarters and other sites, resulting in injuries to peacekeepers. Crosetto labeled the attacks as “extremely serious violations of international law.”
During a news conference in Rome, Crosetto emphasized that there is no justification for the Israeli attacks and summoned the Israeli ambassador to Italy to address the issue. He asserted Italy’s independence in decision-making and emphasized that they cannot take orders from the Israeli government.
Israel’s ongoing airstrikes in Lebanon, targeting alleged Hezbollah positions, have led to significant civilian casualties and displacement. The conflict has escalated following Israel’s offensive against Gaza, prompting concerns of a regional war. Despite international warnings, Israel expanded the conflict by launching a ground invasion into southern Lebanon on Oct. 1.
