Israeli airstrikes in central Beirut killed 22 and injured over 100, including a Hezbollah official escaping an assassination attempt. Two U.N. peacekeepers were injured in southern Lebanon, adding to concerns for their safety.
The conflict between Israel and Hezbollah, sparked by the latter’s support of Hamas during the Gaza war, has intensified in recent weeks. Israel targeted Hezbollah’s top leaders, with Wafiq Safa surviving an assassination attempt.
The strikes hit a densely populated area in Beirut, causing extensive damage. There were no prior evacuation warnings, and casualties included a family of eight who had fled the south.
Lebanon reported 22 dead and 117 wounded, with over 2,000 killed by Israeli strikes in the past year. The attempt on Safa’s life represents an expansion of Israel’s targets within Hezbollah ranks.
While both parties support a cease-fire, diplomatic efforts have been overshadowed by Israel’s military actions. U.N. peacekeepers in Lebanon are facing increased risks, with operations significantly impacted.
Peacekeepers ‘in jeopardy’
Israel’s escalating conflict with Lebanon, including attacks on peacekeepers, has raised international concerns. Calls for de-escalation and cease-fires continue amidst ongoing tensions in the region.
