Missing the Deadline: Ireland’s Race to Boost Cybersecurity
Ireland is racing against the clock to meet the deadline for transposing the new European Union cybersecurity directive into Irish law. The Network and Information Security Directive, NIS2, requires organizations in the public and private sectors to enhance their cyber defenses by October 17.
NIS2 brings stricter requirements for enforcing cybersecurity and imposes heavier fines for non-compliance, urging organizations to take measures to secure supply chains. Despite missing the deadline, Ireland is not alone as most EU Member States are also behind schedule, aiming to have the legislation in place by 2025.
While the deadline will be missed, steps have been taken to comply with the new EU cybersecurity rules, including designating national competent authorities for each sector outlined in the directive. The National Cyber Security Centre has been designated as the lead national competent authority, highlighting Ireland’s commitment to cybersecurity.
Although the road to compliance may be challenging, Ireland is taking necessary actions to bolster its cybersecurity measures and protect critical infrastructure.
