India has approved plans for constructing two new class nuclear-powered attack submarines, costing around $5.4 billion, as part of a modernization effort to counter China’s naval presence in the Indian Ocean. Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s cabinet has given the green light for these submarines, with a total of six planned by the Indian Navy.
Nuclear-powered attack submarines are faster, quieter, and have longer underwater capabilities than conventional diesel-powered craft, making them harder to detect and highly potent naval weapons. Only a few countries like China, France, Russia, and the US currently manufacture them. India, which previously leased submarines from Russia, is now focusing on domestic production.
The new submarines will be constructed in Visakhapatnam, with Larsen and Toubro expected to join the project. Unlike the current Arihant-class submarines capable of launching nuclear weapons, these new submarines will enhance India’s naval capabilities significantly. As India continues to strengthen its military presence in the region, these submarines will play a crucial role in bolstering its defense strategy.
