IDF troops shoot at UNIFIL position in Lebanon, injuring two – UN.

Israeli forces targeted a UNIFIL observation post in southern Lebanon, injuring two individuals, sparking concerns for global security and a plea for peace by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. The escalating conflicts in the Middle East pose a serious threat, emphasized by Guterres during a press conference in Laos.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez and Italian Defense Minister Guido Crosetto condemned Israel’s actions against UN peacekeepers, denouncing the attacks as potential war crimes. Sanchez urged the international community to halt weapon sales to Israel, while Crosetto deemed the incidents a violation of humanitarian law.

UNIFIL, stationed in southern Lebanon to monitor hostilities, reported injuries to peacekeepers in the Israeli gunfire incidents. While Italy protested and demanded explanations from Israel, the Israeli military acknowledged firing near the UNIFIL base in Naqoura, citing operational reasons due to Hezbollah’s presence.

The incidents highlight the fragile peace in the region, underscoring the importance of ensuring the safety of UN peacekeepers and preventing further escalation towards full-scale conflict.
