These armed groups are exploiting hundreds, if not thousands, of impoverished children by offering them food, shelter, and false promises of a better life.
The chaos in Haiti has intensified since the assassination of President Jovenel Moïse, with millions facing hunger and millions more under the control of violent armed groups. The lack of funds has hindered efforts to restore order, allowing gangs to escalate violence and terrorize communities.
Children, desperate and hungry, are being coerced into criminal activities, including spying, violence, and even sex work. Gang leaders entice teenagers with images of wealth and power on social media platforms like TikTok, trapping them in a cycle of violence with no escape.
HRW is calling on the government to implement programs to protect children and support their reintegration into society. With Haiti’s state services in disarray and schools frequently closed, aid organizations face challenges in preventing children from falling prey to gang recruitment. The cycle of violence and exploitation continues, trapping vulnerable children in a dangerous and bleak future.
