In Ireland, funding and action for biodiversity conservation and restoration are deemed “totally inadequate” as stated by the Climate Change Advisory Council in their latest report. The council emphasized the urgent need for increased financial support and accelerated action to enhance biodiversity and address climate change.
Healthy ecosystems play a crucial role in mitigating climate change impacts and preventing ecological breakdown. Professor Yvonne Buckley highlighted the importance of ecosystem restoration, such as rewetting bogs, to benefit endangered species and improve resilience to climate change.
However, Ireland lacks comprehensive biodiversity data and habitat maps, hindering effective conservation efforts. The council recommended setting ambitious targets, increasing funding for biodiversity action plans, and protecting at least 30% of land and sea by 2030.
Furthermore, the Government should develop a research program to understand climate change impacts on nature and support farmers in adopting nature-friendly practices. By prioritizing biodiversity, Ireland can combat climate chaos and safeguard its ecosystems for future generations.
