France has summoned its Israeli ambassador following an incident where two UN peacekeepers in Lebanon were wounded by Israeli fire. The French foreign ministry condemned the “serious violations of international law” and demanded an explanation from Israel for the “deliberate fire” against the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL). While no French soldiers were injured, France stressed the need for an immediate cessation of hostilities and a diplomatic resolution.
Israel admitted to firing in the area, citing the presence of Hezbollah militants near UN posts. Italy and Washington expressed deep concern and suggested that the actions may constitute war crimes. UNIFIL, with about 10,000 peacekeepers stationed in south Lebanon, has been calling for a ceasefire since the escalation between Israel and Hezbollah on September 23.
France, with a longstanding military presence in Lebanon, contributes approximately 700 troops to UNIFIL. The French foreign ministry commended all UNIFIL personnel for their dedication and professionalism despite the challenging circumstances.
