The city of Saratov was shaken by a gruesome crime when 35-year-old Azamat Iskaliyev brutally murdered his girlfriend, caught on surveillance footage. This wasn’t his first violent act, as he previously killed his wife and was released early from prison. The Russian authorities seem to be hiding the crimes committed by returnees from war, but the truth is slowly emerging. The “I Want to Live” project, set up by Ukraine’s Main Directorate of Intelligence, aims to help disillusioned Russian soldiers surrender to the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
Sadly, the aftermath of the war has led to almost 500 Russian citizens falling victim to returning military personnel, with many facing robbery, assault, and even death. Women make up a third of the victims, and it’s alarming to see the rise in crimes committed by former prisoners and military personnel affected by PTSD. Despite efforts to treat those suffering from PTSD, many refuse help, leading to a cycle of violence.
