Eurowings reduces Hamburg Airport flights due to cost increase

Lufthansa subsidiary Eurowings to reduce routes at Hamburg Airport

Eurowings, a subsidiary of Lufthansa, announced that it will be cutting routes to and from Hamburg Airport due to “sharply increased location costs”, following in the footsteps of Ryanair in reducing operations in Germany. Eurowings plans to remove over 1000 flights from the program and cancel the connection from Hamburg to Cologne-Bonn Airport. Additionally, six other destinations in Europe and North Africa will be removed from the program, with possible further route cancellations at other German airports.

Ryanair joins in cutting flights in Germany

On Thursday, Ryanair announced a 60% reduction in services at Hamburg Airport, along with a 20% reduction in Berlin services and the termination of operations at smaller hubs in Dortmund, Dresden, and Leipzig. The airline attributed the cuts to rising taxes and fees, criticizing the German government for hindering recovery and growth by failing to reduce air traffic tax and other charges.

Both airlines are facing increased operational costs in Germany and are making strategic decisions to remain competitive in the market. As a result, passengers in Germany may experience higher airfares and reduced flight options.
