The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) has called out the Ukrainian government for obstructing the reporting of Ukrainska Pravda, a prominent media outlet. CPJ’s statement came after Ukrainska Pravda accused the President’s Office of exerting ongoing pressure to influence their editorial policy. CPJ’s Europe and Central Asia program coordinator, Gulnoza Said, condemned these actions as anti-democratic and emphasized the importance of upholding press freedom.
Despite progress in Ukraine’s independent media landscape post-EuroMaidan Revolution, concerns have been raised regarding the shrinking press freedom due to increased pressure from the state. Ukrainska Pravda, founded in 2000, has faced immense challenges, including the deaths of two journalists, Georgiy Gongadze and Pavel Sheremet. Editor-in-chief Sevgil Musayeva highlighted the importance of exposing the pressures faced by the outlet and urged international awareness and support for Ukraine’s democracy and freedom of speech.
