Chief Whip ‘frightened’ by online threats.

The Government Chief Whip, Hildegarde Naughton, testified in court about feeling “frightened” for her safety after being threatened online. Daragh O’Flaherty, accused of harassment under the 2020 Act, allegedly targeted Ms Naughton and Senator Sean Kyne.

Ms Naughton described receiving threatening messages and videos, prompting her to reassess her movements. She felt unsafe, leading her to skip public events out of fear.

During proceedings, Mr O’Flaherty questioned the witnesses on various topics unrelated to the case, including Covid-19 and vaccine issues. The judge warned him to stay relevant or risk contempt of court.

Det. Garda John Kerrigan highlighted the investigation triggered by messages online, including videos containing threats against politicians. Senator Kyne also testified to feeling threatened, leading to concerns for his safety and that of his family.

The trial continues with a focus on the alleged threats and implications of the accused’s actions.
