President Biden Estimates Hurricane Milton Damages at $50 Billion
During a meeting on the response to Hurricane Milton, US President Joe Biden revealed that the storm’s damages are likely to reach around $50 billion. This figure aligns with insurers’ initial estimates and comes as a relief after the hurricane caused severe damage but on a slightly smaller scale than expected. As of Friday, more than 2 million households and businesses were still without power, with some areas remaining flooded.
Florida governor Ron DeSantis reported that water levels were still rising in some areas while cleanup operations were underway. The state has seen a total of 16 fatalities, mainly due to tornadoes spawned by the hurricane. In light of the devastation, President Biden has canceled a trip to Germany in order to focus on coordinating relief efforts and plans to visit Florida on Sunday.
Despite criticism from his election rival, President Biden stressed the need for bipartisan cooperation and factual information during emergency situations rather than using natural disasters as a campaign tool.
