Writer of Courage Award
Egyptian-British writer Alaa Abd el-Fattah has been honored as the Writer of Courage 2024 by English PEN. The prestigious award was presented by Arundhati Roy at the British Library, where she shared the PEN Pinter Prize 2024 with him. Abd el-Fattah, known for his activism in defending freedom of expression, has been imprisoned in Egypt for over five years.
The Fight for Justice
Despite being eligible for release in September 2024, authorities plan to extend his imprisonment until 2027. Abd el-Fattah’s arrest in 2019 led to charges related to sharing information about a prisoner who died from torture. His continued detention beyond the legal limit has sparked a hunger strike by his mother, Laila Soueif, who seeks justice for her son. The family calls on the UK government to intervene and pressure Egypt for his release.
A Voice of Strength
Alaa Abd el-Fattah’s unwavering courage and powerful voice in advocating for human rights resonate across borders and have now been recognized internationally. His determination to speak out against injustice inspires many in the ongoing fight for freedom of expression worldwide.
